Scrumhalf Morne van den Berg says the Springboks are expecting a fierce contest against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

The world champions are chasing an unbeaten end-of-year tour, and a 12th win in 14 Tests, but Van den Berg insisted they remain grounded.

“We’re in the process of building our game,” he said. “Each week has its own theme and its own work-ons. The environment is great, the atmosphere is good, but it’s all about getting better every week.”

Van den Berg, who has five Test caps, hopes to play his part if given an opportunity.

“I’d like to contribute – that’s my biggest thing,” he said. “Everyone has contributed this year, and I really want to add to that.”

BRITS: What Rassie can achieve with Boks is scary

Having faced Welsh sides regularly in the Vodacom URC, the Lions No 9 expects 11th-ranked Wales to bring their trademark grit despite missing 13 first-choice players.

“They’re tough, competitive, not afraid of anything,” he explained. “They chase lost causes and fight for each other. Even if the team hasn’t played much together, those boys will be ready.”

Wales are navigating a difficult period on and off the field, but Van den Berg believes their slump won’t last forever.

“They’re in a transition phase,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time before they get back on the horse and compete for big trophies again.”

The scrumhalf also highlighted the danger posed by individual Welsh talents.

“They’ve got good players – Dan Edwards is playing quality rugby, I’ve played a lot against Kieran Hardy and Rio Dyer is very exciting,” he said. “We’re not taking the Test lightly. We’re prepping as hard as we can and will give it a full effort.”

Meanwhile, Van den Berg reserved special praise for the six Springboks – Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Thomas du Toit, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Cheslin Kolbe – named in the World Rugby Team of the Year.

“It’s a privilege to see how they train and carry themselves,” he said. “But more importantly, they’re incredible people. They deserve everything that comes their way – and there’s so much more to come from them.”

Van den Berg will return straight to the Lions after the tour.

“No downtime,” he smiled. “I’m fresh and ready to go.”
