Extreme cycling across Southern Africa offers one of the most varied and rewarding long distance adventures on the continent.

The region invites cyclists who are willing to ride far, climb hard and embrace remote conditions. This is a trail defined by contrasts where each border crossing brings new terrain, new cultures and new challenges worth conquering.

    Namibia

Northern Namibia offers a challenging start due to heat, limited water points and rugged gravel tracks. Cyclists often begin in the Kunene region where routes around Opuwo lead through semi arid valleys and dry riverbeds. Progress can be slow because the terrain combines loose gravel, corrugated sections and long, exposed straights. The route south toward Twyfelfontein and Brandberg introduces scenic value with ancient rock engravings, volcanic formations and wide desert basins. Although remote, the area provides a clear understanding of Namibia’s ecological zones and geological history, which makes this segment both physically and educationally rewarding.

    Botswana

Botswana presents a strong contrast with its mostly flat terrain and predictable road conditions. Cyclists frequently choose the Maun to Nata corridor or the Kasane to Gweta route because both provide safe travel patterns, consistent road quality and access to accommodation at strategic intervals. Wildlife density is high, particularly near elephant migration routes and the Makgadikgadi region. Riders benefit from early morning starts to reduce exposure to heat and minimise encounters with animals that use the roads during cooler periods. Botswana’s infrastructure supports long daily distances which makes it suitable for efficient progress across the country.

    Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe introduces hilly terrain and a combination of cultural and natural interest points. The ascent into Matobo National Park near Bulawayo features granite kopjes and protected conservation zones. Cyclists experience moderate climbs that offer wide views across the landscape. Further east, the routes toward Gweru and Masvingo provide access to the Great Zimbabwe archaeological site. These roads contain rolling gradients and provide insight into rural settlement patterns, agricultural areas and regional topography. Zimbabwe’s towns offer reliable opportunities for mechanical assistance and resupply, which improves logistical certainty for long distance riders.

    Zambia

Zambia adds long stretches of highway riding and a mix of plateau and valley environments. Most cyclists enter through the Victoria Falls border and travel north to Livingstone before continuing toward Lusaka. The T1 and T2 highways are direct but carry significant heavy vehicle traffic, so many cyclists use secondary roads where possible. The ascent toward the capital includes several extended climbs and views across agricultural plains. Zambia’s rural communities frequently assist with water and local information. This makes the country one of the more socially supportive sections of the regional trail.

    South Africa

The final leg through South Africa introduces well maintained roads and access to mountainous terrain. Cyclists entering from the north move toward Polokwane and eventually into Mpumalanga where the landscape becomes steeper and more forested. Passes such as Long Tom, Robbers Pass and those surrounding the Blyde River Canyon offer sustained climbs, technical descents and consistent scenic value. This section requires strong fitness levels and sound braking technique due to sharp bends and rapid elevation changes.

Preparing for an extreme cycling expedition

An extreme cycling trail through Southern Africa demands comprehensive planning, resilience and knowledge of regional conditions. Cyclists who prepare adequately gain access to remarkable landscapes, diverse wildlife zones and significant cultural sites. The combination of environmental variety and physical challenge establishes this transnational route as one of the most informative and rewarding long distance cycling experiences on the continent.
