Safety is shaping travel decisions more than ever, and Europe is leaning into the trend. According to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), Iceland has once again been crowned the safest country in the world, joining Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria and Portugal among Europe’s most secure destinations for the year ahead.

For travellers prioritising peace of mind alongside scenery, culture and good infrastructure, these countries are emerging as clear front-runners, as previously reported by Travel and Tour World.

Iceland tops the global safety rankings again

Iceland has held the number-one spot on the Global Peace Index for an impressive 18 consecutive years. The ranking reflects the country’s exceptionally low crime rates, political stability and minimal militarisation, including the absence of a standing army.

Visitors can move freely between Reykjavik and Iceland’s dramatic natural attractions, from glaciers and volcanoes to geothermal lagoons, with safety firmly embedded into the travel experience. Tools like the 112 Iceland app provide real-time weather alerts and emergency assistance, particularly valuable in a country where nature plays a starring role.

Tourism numbers continue to rise, with more than two million visitors expected in 2025, many drawn by Iceland’s reputation as a calm, well-run and welcoming destination.

Ireland, Denmark and Austria remain top choices

Ireland ranks second on the 2025 GPI, reinforcing its image as one of Europe’s most visitor-friendly destinations. Low crime rates, strong governance and famously warm hospitality make it a reliable option for travellers exploring everything from Dublin’s lively streets to the windswept Wild Atlantic Way.

Denmark follows closely, with Copenhagen often cited as one of Europe’s safest and most liveable cities. Pedestrian-friendly streets, efficient public transport and high trust in public services allow travellers to explore with ease.

Austria also places highly, offering a blend of cultural depth and outdoor adventure. From Vienna’s grand museums to alpine hiking trails, the country’s excellent infrastructure and low crime rates make it particularly appealing for slow, immersive travel.

Switzerland and Portugal balance safety with scenery

Switzerland continues to be synonymous with stability. Its political neutrality, efficient public systems and reliable transport networks create an environment where travellers can enjoy alpine landscapes, historic cities and lake regions without concern.

Portugal rounds out the top tier, ranking seventh globally. Long favoured for its affordability and climate, the country’s low levels of violent crime and relaxed pace of life are adding to its appeal. Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve consistently feature among Europe’s safest urban and coastal destinations.

    Other European countries worth noting

Several other nations also score highly on the GPI, offering travellers a wider range of safe travel options:

    • Slovenia, praised for its natural beauty and low crime rates
    • Finland, known for strong governance and well-managed cities
    • Norway and Sweden, combining high living standards with vast, safe wilderness areas

Why safety-focused travel is on the rise

Travelling in high-ranking safety destinations often comes with added benefits: reliable infrastructure, efficient emergency services and well-maintained public spaces. Many of these countries also prioritise sustainability, making them appealing to travellers who want to explore responsibly and at a slower pace.
