Festival season is here, and with events like Milk & Cookies, WAV Festival, Secrets of Summer and other festivals approaching, it’s time to get your plans (and your mindset) in order.

Whether you’re heading to a one-day city festival or a full weekend of music, sun and dancing, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure your experience is memorable for all the right reasons.

From what to pack to how to stay safe in big crowds, here’s your essential guide to prepping for festival season.

Start with the basics: tickets, transport and timing

Before you even think about outfits or playlists, lock down the logistics. Make sure your ticket is downloaded, saved offline or printed if needed. Screenshot QR codes — signal can be unreliable when thousands of people are trying to connect at once.

Plan your transport ahead of time. Decide whether you’re driving, using a shuttle service, ride-hailing, or public transport, and confirm how you’ll be getting home, especially if the festival runs late. If you’re going with friends, agree on arrival times and a rough schedule so no one gets left behind at the gates.

    Dress smart, not just cute

Festival outfits are part of the fun, but comfort and practicality matter more than you think. Opt for breathable fabrics, especially for these summer festivals, and shoes you can walk and dance in all day. Blisters can ruin an otherwise perfect lineup.

Bring layers if the event stretches into the evening — even hot days can cool down fast after sunset. A hat or cap is essential for daytime festivals, and sunglasses aren’t just stylish, they protect your eyes from harsh sun.

Pack a small but strategic bag

Most festivals have bag size restrictions, so check the rules beforehand. What you should prioritise packing includes:

    • Sunscreen (travel-size)
    • Hand sanitiser or wipes
    • A reusable water bottle (if refill stations are available)
    • Lip balm and moisturiser
    • A portable phone charger
    • Plasters or blister pads
    • Cash and ID (keep these secure)

Avoid overpacking — you’ll be carrying everything all day.

    Hydration and fuel are non-negotiable

Dancing in the sun for hours takes a toll on your body. Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty yet. Alternate alcohol with water and eat proper meals before and during the festival. Food trucks can be tempting, but queues can be long — eating beforehand helps keep your energy levels stable.

If you’re attending multiple festivals across the season, pacing yourself becomes even more important.

Safety in crowds: know before you go

Large festivals are generally well-managed, but personal safety should always be top of mind.

    • Set a clear meeting point with friends in case you get separated.
    • Keep your phone charged and avoid keeping it in easily accessible pockets.
    • Be aware of exits and medical tents when you arrive.
    • Trust your instincts — if a situation feels off, remove yourself and seek help.
    • Stick together when moving through crowds, especially at night, and avoid isolated areas if you’re alone.

    Substance awareness and consent matter

If you choose to drink or partake in anything else, know your limits. Never accept drinks from strangers, don’t leave your drink unattended, and check in on your friends regularly. Festivals are about freedom and expression, but consent and respect are non-negotiable, for yourself and others.

If someone in your group feels unwell, take it seriously and seek medical assistance immediately.

Prepare for the weather (and the unexpected)

South African summer festivals can mean intense heat, sudden wind, or even unexpected rain. Check the forecast before you go and plan accordingly. A lightweight rain poncho can be a lifesaver, and sunscreen should be reapplied throughout the day.

Mentally preparing for things not going exactly to plan also helps — queues, delays, or set changes are part of the experience.

Go in with the right mindset

At its core, festival season is about music, connection and shared moments. Don’t stress about seeing every act or capturing everything on your phone. Be present. Dance. Take breaks. Soak it in.

With the right prep, festivals can be the highlights of your summer calendar, not just for the music, but for the memories you make along the way.

A little planning now means you can focus on the fun later — safely, comfortably and stress-free.
