The City of Cape Town has reiterated its strict stance against the illegal sale, storage, and detonation of fireworks, emphasising that only approved displays with valid permits are permitted.

According to Cape ETC, This crackdown comes as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public safety, protect animal welfare, and alleviate pressure on emergency services as Cape Town heads into its festive season.

In an official statement shared on social media, the City made it clear that it no longer designates specific fireworks sites for events such as Diwali, Guy Fawkes, or New Year’s Eve.

This means that any use of fireworks without a valid permit is deemed illegal and can result in serious consequences for offenders.

Fireworks cause serious distress to animals, pose fire and injury risks, and place added strain on emergency services,’ the City’s statement reads, resonating a commitment to keeping communities and their wildlife safe.

Furthermore, the City has warned that children under the age of 16 are prohibited from handling fireworks, underscoring its dedication to protecting younger populations from potential harm.

In addition to this ban, the City has expressed its disapproval of sky lanterns, citing significant fire risks associated with their use. These airborne devices, known for their beauty during celebrations, have been identified as a potential hazard that could endanger lives and properties.

Residents are encouraged to report any illegal fireworks activities or related incidents to the Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700.
