Kaizer Chiefs signings mid-term report: 3

Kaizer Chiefs are halfway through the season, and this series hands out report cards for all the new signings.

After Thabiso Monyane (read here) and Nkanyiso Shinga (read here), we now look at Paseka Mako, a signing expected to make an immediate impact.

Mako’s first half of the 2025/26 campaign as a Kaizer Chiefs footballer has been a mixed bag for the 31-year-old left-back.

    AN UNLUCKY START

The Zebediela-born Mako arrived as a free agent following a long spell at Orlando Pirates.

He arrived at Naturena carrying loads of experience: 242 professional games, three goals, 15 assists, and four MTN8 trophies alongside a Nedbank Cup.

However, things haven’t gone entirely to plan. A freak accident in pre-season training resulted in a fractured arm, forcing Mako to miss the Netherlands pre-season tour.

He eventually made his debut Kaizer Chiefs in August against Polokwane City. He soon walked away with the Man of the Match award after an outstanding performance in their Betway Premiership win against Golden Arrows in late August 2025.

But another muscle injury in October disrupted his rhythm.

SECOND OPTION FOR KAIZER CHIEFS BEHIND BRADLEY CROSS

By the halfway point, Mako has played nine times for the Glamour Boys, but he has spent much of the season as the second option behind Bradley Cross at left-back.

Despite his pedigree and experience, injuries and timing have kept him from cementing his place as the first-choice left-back.

Even with setbacks, Mako’s big-club experience remains invaluable to Amakhosi. His knowledge of the PSL, winning mentality, and professionalism can help guide the squad, even if he isn’t always on the pitch.

Will Mako recover fully in the second half of the season and reclaim a starting spot, or will he continue as a backup option? Only time will tell.

Mid-term report card: 6/10 – Solid experience, unlucky with injuries, yet to make a consistent impact.
