Sports Content Creator Akhona Nongauza is forging a potent path for herself as she looks to make her mark, building a remarkable online presence on social media with a profile that is being recognised as among the top go-to accounts to track.
The vlogger, also known as “Sports_bunny15” on social media, says sport has been an important part of her life for as long as she can remember. So much so that her mother even gave her a sports-related nickname.
“I grew up watching, playing, and participating in almost every sport, which sparked a lifelong passion for the sports industry. I have always been eager to be involved in the sports space. My mom even calls me “Referee” because I am always at the stadium, so she would say surely a match can’t start without me, because I have to blow the whistle.”
“As my love for sports grew, I turned my personal Instagram account into a sports page called ‘Sports_bunny15′. I later converted all my other social media platforms into sports pages as well, after realising that I was already creating sports content for fun, and decided to take it seriously and build something meaningful from it.”

She says being able to convey what is happening on the field is something that really excites her.
“Being a sports content creator allows me to be part of the action, filming moments of the game, interviewing and connecting with fans. The energy of a live stadium is electric. Being part of it, witnessing history unfold, makes me happy.”
In addition to her social media career, Nongauza is also a radio host at Umphakathi FM, a radio station based in Randfontein, Gauteng. Here she drives the lunchtime show, and it consists of sports updates, social media updates, birthday shoutouts, and daily topics.
She shared with gsport that she has aspirations of one day becoming an IsiXhosa sports commentator or a media officer for a professional club. Nongauza elaborated that taking up these careers will allow her to elevate representation, culture, and storytelling in South African sport.
“Becoming an isiXhosa commentator is important to me because it gives a voice to millions of people who connect to sport through their home language. Commentating in isiXhosa makes sport more inclusive, relatable, and emotionally powerful, while preserving and celebrating indigenous language and culture on major platforms.”
“At the same time, working as a media officer for a professional club allows me to shape narratives behind the scenes by telling players’ stories, managing communication, and building a strong, authentic club identity. Together, these careers place me at the intersection of sport, media, and culture, where I can amplify underrepresented voices, inspire communities, and contribute to the professional growth and transformation of South African sport.”

One thing that she has witnessed is the increase in women in the sports content creator sector, and Nongauza says this has only made the industry stronger and given girls a role model to emulate.
“The vast improvement in women’s sport in South Africa positively impacts my creative process as a content creator by providing more inspiring stories, greater visibility, and stronger representation to work with.”
“The growth in performance, media coverage, and support for women athletes gives me access to powerful moments and authentic narratives that translate into engaging and meaningful video content,” says Nongauza.
“It also motivates me to create content that celebrates achievements, challenges stereotypes, and inspires young girls, while the increased professionalism in women’s sport allows me to produce higher-quality, visually compelling videos with greater purpose and impact.”
Her content creation has seen her be part of some major campaigns, which have now become some career highlights, as Nongauza was accredited as a sports content creator for the BetWay SA20 League. She has also worked with Adidas and Orlando Pirates FC, representing Studio88 at the Carling Knockout Final, as well as working with BIC South Africa for Springboks pre-match goodies, to name a few.
While she had achieved much success in sports media, the content creator’s career dreams are not only confined to the world of sport. The media professional will be graduating with a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate phase (Grade 4-6). She is confident that this will not really have an influence on her role in sports media.

“I don’t think it will affect my media career, as most of the matches are on weekends or weekdays after school. But if an offer is presented with the option of securing a stable position in either sports or teaching, I would opt for sports.”
Nongauza also mentioned the impact of gsport and she explains how she views their influence on women’s sport and women in sport.
“gsport has totally broken the stereotypes regarding women and sport. It is showing the world what women in sports are all about. They are paving the way for more girls to be involved and be seen. gsport has elevated women in sport. A young girl today can now read about women’s excellence in sports.”

In closing, she had this message for her young girls who have dreams of joining the sports world.
“My message to young girls is that they should be confident and believe that they belong in the spaces they dream about. Chasing dreams and passions is everything. Don’t be afraid to start, take risks, and follow what sets your soul on fire.”
