Cape Town’s Signal Hill is beloved for its panoramic views and golden-hour glow, making it a favorite for sunset chasers and solo adventurers alike.

But, according to reports by IOL, a recent experience shared by a solo traveler shows that even well-trodden paths can hold surprises,  some stranger than others.

Solo hiker @davidschmitz98 had a simple plan: head up Signal Hill, enjoy the sunset and then make his way back down. But just “two minutes before I arrived at the end of the hiking trail,” he found himself face-to-face with a man standing in his path. “He grabbed my shirt and said, ‘Where are you from? Where are you going?’” Schmitz recalled.

When the question “Where is your phone?” followed, Schmitz believed he was prepared, his phone was safely tucked under his clothes, and the only cash he had was in a backpack. “I was like, ‘I only got this with me’,” he said, handing over the money.

The encounter took an unexpected twist when the man also asked for Schmitz’s backpack. When the hiker insisted he needed it, explaining “there is nothing in there,” he opened the bag to reveal some personal items, including something to smoke. “He saw it and then told me, ‘Hey, don’t smoke man’,” Schmitz said, a moment that left him bewildered.

Despite losing the cash, the backpack remained untouched, and the interaction kept getting stranger. At one point the man held the money and politely asked, “Can I take it?” to which Schmitz quipped: “Brother, what answer do you expect me to say?”

The unusual exchange didn’t end there. The man claimed he was part of a gang and even offered unsolicited pointers on gang signs and what phrases to use in “gang language.”

Reflecting on the surreal experience, Schmitz said: “I guess the story about Cape Town is true. But I still love it here, but I will definitely not go on a solo hike in this country anymore.”

While this encounter stands out for its odd mix of robbery and unsolicited advice, it also highlights a broader conversation about safety on Cape Town’s trails. Robberies and muggings have been reported on Signal Hill and other nearby hiking routes, particularly during quieter times like sunset, and locals often advise visitors not to hike alone or after dark.

Signal Hill’s beauty is undeniable, but as this story reminds us, part of enjoying it is staying aware and planning hikes with safety in mind.
