The resignation of former Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Dion George has deepened divisions within the Democratic Alliance, drawing attention to tensions at the top of the party.

George’s decision to walk away from both the DA and Parliament has sharply divided political analysts, with some warning it weakens the party’s credibility, while others believe leader John Steenhuisen can weather the storm.

Dion George Resigns After Public Clash With DA Leader

A DA member since 1995, George announced his resignation on Thursday following a bitter and very public fallout with Steenhuisen. He also stepped down as the party’s federal chairperson of finance.

George said he was effectively pushed out after being removed from Cabinet in November 2025, insisting his political fate was sealed when the DA requested his dismissal as minister.

He was replaced by DA spokesperson Willie Aucamp, a move George claims marked the beginning of a coordinated effort to sideline him. He further said he only learnt of the decision through media reports while attending COP30 in Brazil.

Claims of ‘Captured Leadership’ and Financial Mismanagement

In explosive claims, George alleged the DA leadership under Steenhuisen had been “captured” by the ANC and criminal interests. He further accused the party of abandoning its principles within the Government of National Unity (GNU) by supporting ANC budgets and policies.

George also criticised Steenhuisen over alleged mismanagement of party funds and called for an independent forensic investigation into the DA’s credit card usage. He dismissed the findings of the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC) as a “whitewash”.

DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille rejected George’s version of events, saying he resigned before responding to serious allegations.

“It is unfortunate that Dr George has resigned before answering a pending disciplinary matter before the DA’s Federal Legal Commission,” Zille said.

She confirmed the FLC process would continue as planned and wished George well in his future endeavours.

Political Analysts Divided on Impact of Exit

Political analysts remain split on the significance of George’s departure.

Independent analyst Goodenough Mashego described the resignation as a blow but said it would not undermine the party’s leadership.

“The resignation of Dion George is a blow to the DA, but not to Helen Zille’s agenda. She has always been able to appoint replacements, and the party will continue functioning,” Mashego said.

He added that any political fallout would likely be limited.

However, analyst Solly Rashilo warned that George’s exit could damage the DA’s image ahead of its April federal conference and the 2026 elections.

“As the former head of party finances, George’s departure and his claims of ‘captured leadership’ hit the DA’s image of clean governance. Instead of a united front, the party now looks divided,” Rashilo said.

Professor Theo Neethling, head of Political Studies at the University of the Free State, offered a more measured view, describing the resignation as a temporary setback.

“In my opinion, George’s resignation did not inflict major harm on the DA or its role in the GNU,” Neethling said.

“He was not a significant electoral player, and no defections or organisational instability followed.”

Neethling added that while George’s allegations point to internal disputes, they do not amount to proof of widespread wrongdoing.

“Despite questions about internal financial governance and leadership behaviour, these issues remain unresolved but won’t derail John Steenhuisen in his position as the DA’s top leader,” he said.
