SCOTUSblog co-founder Tom Goldstein testified in court Wednesday at his white-collar criminal jury trial, admitting to tax-filing mistakes but denying criminal tax fraud.
Asked why he failed to report gambling losses to the IRS, Goldstein replied that he did not want his wife, SCOTUSblog co-founder Amy Howe, to know, according to a story by Law.com.
Federal prosecutors have accused Goldstein of evading taxes, filing fraudulent tax returns, willfully failing to pay taxes, and accumulating large gambling debts between the years 2016 and 2022, according to Law.com. The jury trial is taking place in federal court in Maryland.
Goldstein is an appellate attorney who has argued more than 40 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He reported $2.7 million in net gambling income on his 2016 taxes, according to Law.com.
