Cape Town International Airport set for R10 billion upgrades to boost capacity
Cape Town International Airport (CTIA), one of South Africa’s busiest gateways, is about to undergo a massive transformation. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has earmarked over R10 billion for infrastructure upgrades that promise smoother passenger journeys, faster aircraft turnaround, and a stronger regional economic boost.

According to Top Auto ,these upgrades are part of ACSA’s wider R21.7 billion investment across its airport network, highlighting the strategic role CTIA plays in tourism, trade, and connectivity for the Western Cape.
A runway built for the future
The headline project is a new, realigned main runway with an estimated cost of R6.4 billion. Measuring 3,500 metres by 60 metres, the runway will be shifted 11.5 degrees eastward to optimise aircraft movement and free up space for terminal expansions.
Rapid exit and partial parallel taxiways will reduce runway occupancy time, improving on-time performance during peak travel periods. Once complete, the runway will be fully Code F compliant, meaning it can handle the next generation of large aircraft and strengthen Cape Town’s position as a world-class airport.
“The runway upgrade is more than asphalt; it’s about resilience, efficiency, and unlocking our terminal development potential,” said Thabo Phateng.
Terminal expansions to modernise passenger experience
Alongside the runway, the domestic terminal is getting a major facelift. With R3 billion allocated, the domestic arrivals section will see a R2.4 billion upgrade, while departures will be extended at R500 million.
These expansions will add more gates and airbridges, reduce bussing, and improve passenger flow. Modern retail, food outlets, and family-friendly spaces will make navigating the terminal easier and more enjoyable.
Meanwhile, the international terminal will be redeveloped at an estimated R863 million. Upgrades include additional apron stands, enhanced immigration processing, more lounge areas, and better security and baggage handling facilities. The design focuses on natural light, intuitive wayfinding, and a passenger-centric experience.
Economic growth and regional impact
ACSA emphasises that these developments are not just about convenience. They will strengthen Cape Town’s role as a critical economic gateway, supporting tourism growth, trade facilitation, and long-term regional development.
“By expanding capacity and enhancing operational resilience, we are positioning the airport to support sustained passenger growth, tourism expansion, trade facilitation and long-term regional economic development,” said Phateng.
Construction will be carefully phased to ensure minimal disruption, with close coordination between airlines, commercial partners, and regulatory authorities.
With the new runway and terminal enhancements, Cape Town International Airport is set to welcome passengers with a faster, smarter, and more seamless experience, a boost not just for travellers, but for the Western Cape’s economy as a whole.
