Londolozi’s recent centenary film is proof that safari isn’t something you simply do. It’s something you shape. Transforming and developing, from dust to masterpiece, while still letting the wild lead. Sometimes that means taking the wheel, shifting gears, or entirely rebuilding the very structure that drives the industry. One hundred years of learning, crafting, expanding, producing, connecting, creating, deconstructing, questioning, defining, redefining, and pioneering. So, consider this a homage: a playful, poetic interpretation of the story behind the story, and the magic that keeps calling people back.

    A Tennis Match, A Toast, A Map

It all started with an unexpected, unplanned land purchase, a spontaneous tennis match, and a few gin and tonics later. Two friends (Charles Boyd Varty and Frank Unger) decided to buy a piece of land marked on a map as Sparta farm, a bankrupt cattle property on the lower western outskirts of the newly proclaimed Kruger National Park.

Barefoot and free-spirited, the two waded through the Sand River, traced the footprints and patterns of the wild, and immersed themselves in their new surroundings.

They quickly learned the rhythm of the bush, always beginning their days at sunrise to the first notes of birdsong. Then, they went on a mission to track predators and big cats, with lions of particular interest. Late afternoons were for rest, when sun-streaks sliced and singed across the skies. After dusk, the fire was lit: a beacon of home, stirring soulful stories of the day, and then a soft, gentle lull to sleep. Only to wake up and do it all again.

    A Ritual Takes Root

Every winter, they escaped the ice-tipped weather of the UK and made the trip to their sun-soaked African escape. Soon, their families joined and grew. Friends came along for the ride, and their friends soon followed too.

Enter Boyd Varty Snr, and then his sons, commonly known as the Varty Brothers. They grew up in the bush. It was their home, their classroom, their calling. The love their father had was etched into their very beings. They were nurtured alongside the land by this love for the land. And it became them.

After their beloved father’s passing, the family faced a choice: sell the land that was considered a dead asset or venture into unchartered territory. They chose the latter.

So, they carved a path into new territory, one that would redefine the safari landscape and the industry as a whole. A rugged skeleton of a safari company was thrown together in haste – with wide eyes, brave hearts, and more grit than resources. They flipped through a dictionary to find a suitable name.

And thus, it was chosen, drawn from the Zulu word meaning “protector of all living things” – the guardians, the keepers.

    Learning the Shape

They didn’t know how to do this – or what this even was – or what making it great would demand of them.

But they knew the land and the magic that occurred all around it.

So, walking in single file, step by step, then jolting down single tracks aboard a ramshackle safari vehicle, they gazed through binoculars and, with one eye open, peered through the camera screen in search of hidden magic, revealing and exposing the secrets of the wilderness.

Through it all was connection: to each other, to place, to purpose, to the animals. They shared raw emotions, epiphanies, giggles, and gratitude. To expand their understanding (and their sightings), they partnered with Shangaan trackers – imparting their knowledge, imprinting the craft. Further, they ventured, outwards and within: through the thickets, the tall grasses, and the land where there was no grass at all.

Altogether, it cannot be simplified or condensed into a single word, not even a few put together. It’s a feeling. A living experience. An unwritten and unspoken alchemy.

    Building the Dream

Soon, partnerships were solidified, and big decisions were made. This was to become guest-worthy.

Into the unknown, the family ventured once again, this time building accommodation from scratch. With the endless abundance of the natural world as their source, their backdrop, and their inspiration. There were no guidelines, no scripts to this play.

It was instinct, taken from the heart, led by the heart. It was improvisation at its best – and one that would become a template for safari masterpieces to come.

At first, there was no idea of luxury. It was bumpy, raw, rugged. To come here was to understand, to experience – to live as simply as possible, living with and alongside the land.

Of course, as they went, they revised, revisited, reimagined. Only then did they refine, redefine, and recreate – not entirely, but evolving from the foundations, from the heartfelt origins where this adventure began.

Then, through the 80s and 90s, they had lift-off and began to fly. Demand grew, community grew, and every cent was poured back in with care and love – completing the circle, keeping it spinning, keeping it growing.

The experience gained momentum. It shone a light on what it should be, what it can be, and became what it is today. Awards were earned. Special guests walked the land and slept beneath its roofs.

It became, for so many, a life-changing experience.

    The Rhythm Remains

Today, Londolozi is the epitome of luxury and land intertwined.

But while much has changed since its inception, the rhythm has not.

The wild will always take the lead.
