President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated that he would not object if Justice Sisi Khampepe were to step aside as chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) inquiry.
The position emerged in court documents filed in response to a legal challenge by former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, who are seeking Khampepe’s removal from the post.

In the papers, Ramaphosa said that if the allegations now raised against Khampepe had been known at the time of her appointment, he would not have chosen her for the role.
Legal Challenge By Mbeki And Zuma Over TRC Inquiry Leadership
The case centres on efforts by Mbeki and Zuma to have Khampepe removed from her position as chair of the TRC inquiry. Their legal challenge has placed the appointment under scrutiny.
Ramaphosa said his intention when appointing the judge was to avoid any controversy that might weaken public trust in the commission’s work.
According to the President, maintaining confidence in the inquiry was a key consideration during the selection process.
Justice Minister Asked To Approach Khampepe About Stepping Down
Ramaphosa also explained that Mmamoloko Kubayi, the Minister of Justice, had been asked to approach Khampepe to consider stepping down.
However, the judge declined the request.
