South African zebra artwork spotted in New York ahead of Starfish gala
From Johannesburg streets to New York City sidewalks, a South African zebra is turning heads and hearts, this week. But don’t worry, it’s not roaming freely; it’s a work of art by Joburg-based contemporary artist James Delaney.
According to Good Things Guy, the zebra, a limited-edition piece and second in a family of eight, is en route to the Starfish Gala, where it will join a curated collection of artworks and experiences auctioned to benefit South Africa’s vulnerable children. The Starfish Greathearts Foundation has spent 25 years supporting over 300,000 children with healthcare, nutrition, and stability, and this year’s gala promises to be a standout celebration of creativity and philanthropy.
From Joburg to New York
Delaney, well-known for revitalising public spaces like The Wilds Park and the iconic Gillooly’s Highway Interchange, has a knack for creating playful, striking sculptures that resonate with both locals and international audiences. Five of the zebra’s siblings, alongside 80 flying egrets, now grace the heart of Joburg as part of the JoziMyJozi initiative, bringing life to the city’s gateways.
“This zebra is part of a tradition for me,” Delaney shares on social media. “I’ve contributed early editions of my doorways prints over the years, so it feels like a natural extension to give back through art.” The piece was photographed in New York outside Henry Birks & Sons, its vibrant blue door providing a striking backdrop and a glimpse into urban life as pedestrians passed in their winter coats.
Art with impact
The zebra isn’t just a visual treat, it carries purpose. Alongside other South African artists such as Astrid Dahl and Arthur Dlamini, Delaney’s work will be auctioned to raise funds for Starfish, helping to sustain the foundation’s mission to support children back home.
Delaney will be attending the gala himself, emphasising the importance of artists using their craft to benefit others. “It’s so important for artists to use what we have to benefit others. The work that Starfish is doing is important,” he says.
From Jozi streets to the Big Apple, this zebra proves that art can travel far and make a difference—even across continents.
