More than a century after Scottish watchmaker Charles Greig first arrived in South Africa by ship, the family name has returned to the shores of Cape Town in a significant new way.

Charles Greig Jewellers has officially opened a new Rolex boutique in the luxury wing of the V&A Waterfront, marking another milestone in the jeweller’s 127-year history.

The launch connects two cities central to the brand’s story: Johannesburg, where the business was founded in 1899, and Cape Town, where its founder first stepped onto South African soil in 1894 after arriving aboard the RMS Scot.

What began as a small watchmaking venture during the gold rush era evolved into one of South Africa’s most enduring family-run luxury businesses. Today, the company spans five generations of the Greig family, with Christopher, Donald, Richard and Tammy Greig continuing the legacy.

The boutique opening also celebrates Charles Greig’s long-standing relationship with Rolex. According to the company, the jeweller is believed to be among the oldest official Rolex retailers in the world, with ties to the Swiss watchmaker dating back to the early 1900s.

The new boutique reflects both heritage and craftsmanship. Historical pieces from the Charles Greig archive include rare co-branded Rolex and Chas Greig & Son watches, pocket watches and Oyster models dating back to the 1910s and 1930s. Among them is a cushion-shaped Rolex officially dated by Rolex’s historical department to between 1916 and 1918.

Jewellery design has also remained central to the family business. Christopher Greig’s collections draw inspiration from Renaissance, Byzantine and Belle Époque influences, often incorporating colourful gemstones, enamel work and motifs inspired by nature, including dragonflies, butterflies and floral designs set with diamonds and precious stones.

The company’s story is closely tied to the evolution of gemstone sourcing in East Africa during the 1960s and 1970s, when discoveries such as tanzanite and tsavorite transformed the global jewellery market. Donald and Richard Greig later completed gemmology studies at the GIA Academy in Santa Monica, helping shape the company’s reputation for fine gemstones and craftsmanship.

Beyond luxury retail, Charles Greig says it continues to support conservation, sport and the arts through various initiatives. These include backing the Cape Town-based Albatross Task Force, supporting the Sally Little Centre for Excellence golf academy and sponsoring young South African concert pianist Lebeko Mosunkutu during his studies at the University of Cape Town.

Set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and the bustling V&A Waterfront, the new Rolex boutique represents both a return to the Cape and a continuation of a legacy shaped by time, craftsmanship and South African history.
