Strong winds and poor visibility caused widespread disruption at Cape Town International Airport this week, with several incoming flights diverted to O. R. Tambo International Airport as severe weather conditions swept across the Western Cape.

According to reports, worsening weather linked to a powerful cold front forced airlines to reroute aircraft bound for Cape Town, while delays and operational disruptions affected travellers across multiple routes.
The South African Weather Service has warned of continued heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions across parts of the province as the storm system moves through the region. Forecasters say the unstable weather pattern has already triggered flooding in some areas and complicated air travel operations.
Cape Town’s winter weather is no stranger to disrupting travel plans, particularly during intense cold fronts when visibility drops and crosswinds intensify around the airport. In this latest wave of disruptions, several flights were reportedly redirected to Johannesburg as crews waited for safer landing conditions in the Mother City.
Travellers scheduled to fly in or out of Cape Town have been encouraged to check directly with their airlines for updated schedules and possible delays. Airlines operating between Johannesburg and Cape Town, including FlySafair, Airlink and LIFT Airline, continue to monitor conditions closely.
Passengers can also track arrivals and departures through Airports Company South Africa’s live flight information portal.
While the weather system is expected to gradually ease in the coming days, authorities remain on alert as further rainfall and wind are forecast across parts of the Western Cape.
