On a state level, the Labrador retriever also takes the No. 1 spot in 17 states and ties for first in another. Washington even has the same top three breeds as the country as a whole: Labrador retriever, Chihuahua, and golden retriever. Connecticut has the same top breeds, but the Chihuahua and the golden retriever swap spots.
In fact, only six states have a most popular breed that doesn’t make the nationwide top 10: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and Vermont. The Chihuahua mix makes a strong showing in the latter five states, while the Labrador mix makes the list in Alaska and Vermont. Alaska’s unique breed is unsurprisingly the Alaskan husky (tied with the Lab mix for No. 3).
