Buea – Recent reports circulating on social media have intensified concerns surrounding the alleged execution of Ewane Roland, the Deputy Prefect of Idabato, in the Bakassi Peninsular, shedding light on the South West Regional Governor’s inadequate handling of the crisis.
Since Ewane’s abduction, the governor has not opted for any decisive administrative action to address the situation apart from empty threats he made upon the abduction. Despite the latest claims that Nigerian pirates, responsible for the kidnapping, have not followed through on their own threats to kill Ewane, the gravity of the situation remains alarming.
The kidnappers initially demanded a staggering $5 million from the Deputy Prefect’s family and have since released a disturbing photograph depicting the tortured local chief alongside the municipal accountant. Although reports of Ewane’s death surfaced early on November 18, 2024, his family has now denied these claims.
In addition to the ransom, the kidnappers have outlined further demands, including the provision of ten generators, a 200-horsepower Yamaha seaplane, and the release of their detained associates from Buea Central Prison. They have made it clear that without these conditions being met, the future of Ewane Roland remains uncertain.
The unfolding crisis calls for urgent action and responsibility from the governor, who must be held accountable for the mismanagement that has exacerbated this dire situation.
