South Africans are accustomed to driving on the left side of the road, so venturing to countries where traffic flows on the right can feel disorienting…

Don’t find yourself road-tripping in France, exploring the U.S., or navigating Italy’s winding lanes without saving these top tips to help you stay safe and confident while driving on the right (read wrong) side of the road!

    1. Stay alert at intersections

Intersections are where confusion strikes most. Always double-check the direction of traffic before turning. Remind yourself: “Right is right” (stay to the right side of the road).

    2. Use visual reminders

Place a sticky note on the dashboard (e.g., “STAY RIGHT”) or adjust your rental car’s steering wheel alignment to keep your position top of mind.

    3. Practice in a quiet area first

Before hitting highways, practice in an empty parking lot or quiet neighbourhood to acclimate to the vehicle layout and road orientation. Unless you’re accustomed to it, practice before taking your rental car out on busy roads.

    4. Master roundabouts

In right-driving countries, roundabouts flow counterclockwise (vs. South Africa’s clockwise). Give way to traffic coming from your left.

    5. Let a co-pilot navigate

A passenger can help spot road signs, monitor lane discipline, and help reduce your stress. Bonus points if they’re familiar with local driving rules!

    6. Rent an automatic vehicle

Avoid the added complexity of manual gear-shifting with your non-dominant hand. Automatics simplify focus on the road.

    7. Study local road signs

Familiarise yourself with unique signage (e.g., “Yield” instead of “Give Way”) and priority rules (e.g., right-of-way in Europe).

Too nervous to drive on the right? Visit these left-side countries instead!

If the idea of switching sides feels a little too overwhelming, consider these popular tourist destinations where driving aligns with what you’re used to in South Africa. All of these destination drive on the left-side of the road:

    • United Kingdom
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • Ireland
    • Thailand
    • South Africa’s Neighbours – Botswana and Mauritius – also drive on the left.
