Titans Cricket Marketing and Communications Officer Omolemo Molefe aims to stay on top of her game with a winning mindset after two years with the cricket franchise, and she intends to keep forging her path in the sports media industry by delivering premium content to fans, and ensuring that her brands are well-represented.

“What my CEO has always said is that as the Titans and also the working staff must always have a champion mindset. We always have to be at the top of our game no matter what so, the Titans haven’t won trophies for the last two seasons, but it’s the thing of what can we do to stay at the top, what can we do to ensure the Titans is a leading brand. It’s all about the mindset that we put out there that is leading in aspects that make us a big brand.”

The Pretoria franchise is synonymous with success as they have dominated domestic cricket for many years. This winning mentality has filtered through to Molefe who says she doesn’t take her position at the Titans for granted.

“It’s a big privilege because the Titans is a big brand and I often say to myself to find myself in this position at my age and this organisation is a huge achievement. I will always be grateful for this opportunity. There will be those things that come up, however it’s how I deal with them and ensure that the brand is presented well at all times.”

When we look at Molefe’s career she has admitted that she never saw herself in the sports media industry. She shared with gsport that, once she completed her tertiary education, she got her first job in media at the Department of Defense. From there, Molefe joined the Department of Health, and after that, she began as an intern at the Titans for six months, and when that time concluded, she was offered a full-time contract.

Although she might never have seen herself on this path, Molefe is appreciative that her journey has brought her into the world of the sports media space.

“I have never really been interested in sport but I did do sport in high school. It was something that I didn’t think of, I saw myself in the corporate world … big buildings formal wear, doing a 9-5. That is the kind of job that I saw for myself. So when I got to the Titans it was different, the sports industry is dynamic and forever changing and evolving.  I might not have seen myself here but I am loving it, I love the opportunity and I’ll forever be grateful for it.”

When it comes to her day-to-day operations, the 27-year-old has many tasks to juggle, but what is paramount is ensuring she does a good job, keeping things running smoothly.

“I cover both marketing and communications, I also handle the Titans Mens and Women’s professional teams’ social pages. Also updating websites and ensuring our brand is well represented. A normal day in my office, if it’s match day I prepare for the match, I make sure we get the work out there about getting your tickets to make sure we get a crowd into SuperSport Park. Knowing we always the biggest crowd in the stadium across all stadiums.”

“For instance, right now we have the taste of SuperSport coming up so ensuring that the squads are out there, people are informed that we do have this event at SuperSport Park, and ensuring that the correct information is transferred to the fans and supporters that are following us,” says Molefe. “Not forgetting all the behind-the-scenes!”

She says curating the right social media content is an integral part of ensuring the Titans brand remains well-represented.

Molefe: “Just having confidence in what you do and who you are. Once you have that people will see it on you and you will then exude confidence.”

“Before I post, I just think about how the other person on the end is going to receive it, and when they see this post or read it, how are they going to perceive the brand? What I like doing is going back to previous posts, and seeing which ones have gotten the most reaction.”

“For instance,” Molefe explains, “When I post player pictures, and people interact with them, they love seeing that, and they love seeing the player’s training, and player pictures from previous matches. Then I would ensure that, that type of content is out there as much as possible, with a caption that grabs their attention to ensure there is a clear message.”

A simple lesson she has learned in her job is confidence, and she believes this is something that will take you far in your career.

“Just having confidence in what you do and who you are. Once you have that people will see it on you and you will then exude confidence.”

Something that has also pleased her is the how more opportunities are being created for women in the sports media space. Molefe says the Titans are also doing their part to ensure females are progressing on and off the field.

“It really feels good, the one thing about the Titans is that we have a narrative of growing women’s cricket. There is also the aspect of the women behind the scenes and what they do for women’s cricket.”

“I do know that in a few years, cricket (media) will be dominated by women as well. I look forward to that and it’s just something that I love seeing, women growing in this industry, taking charge and owning it ourselves.”

Molefe has some big dreams for her career as she navigates the sports media industry.

“I just see myself continuing to lead this leading brand, I am living a lot here at the Titans and I am forever grateful for that so I would like to make a huge impact on the Titans.”

On commitment to her job: “I just see myself continuing to lead this leading brand, I am living a lot here at the Titans and I am forever grateful for that so I would like to make a huge impact on the Titans.”

“I have always been into soccer though, that is something I have wanted to venture into, so going into the soccer industry or any other sporting brands like Adidas or Nike is where I can see myself (in the future).”

She encouraged women looking to join the sports media industry to be their cheerleaders.

“You will never get bored! It is something that is always challenging, it’s dynamic and ever-changing, my advice would be just go for it. Just don’t doubt your work and your worth. Push through all the limits and you will come out on top,” she said.
