ActionSA has announced plans to introduce new legislation aimed at protecting and incentivising whistleblowers. The announcement coincides with the party’s commemoration of Babita Deokaran, the late health department official who was murdered after exposing large-scale corruption.

Deokaran was assassinated outside her Mondeor home in Johannesburg in 2021, just weeks after flagging more than R850 million in suspicious payments linked to Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni.

Her killing shocked the nation and exposed the dangers faced by whistleblowers in South Africa.

Herman Mashaba Calls for Stronger Protection Measures

“ActionSA is proud to announce that we are hard at work on formally introducing a private members’ bill that will not only strengthen the fight against corruption, but more importantly, ensure greater protection and incentivisation for whistleblowers who risk everything to expose criminality,” Mashaba said.

He added that Deokaran’s tragic death exposes the failure of existing systems to protect whistleblowers, making reform a pressing priority.

The proposed legislation is expected to push for both legal protection and incentives that encourage individuals to come forward with evidence of corruption.

ActionSA argues that without robust protection, many potential whistleblowers will remain silent, allowing criminal networks to thrive unchecked.

By advancing this private members’ bill, the party hopes to not only honour Deokaran’s sacrifice but also build a safer environment for truth-tellers who play a critical role in holding those in power accountable.
