Affies edged Paul Roos at the Wildeklawer rugby festival on Wednesday while there were also wins for Marlow, Nico Malan and Waterkloof.

In a match briefly halted in the second half due to lightning, Affies openside flank Luan Potgieter scored two tries from dominant driving mauls, with blindside flank Elwin Jansen van Vuuren also crossing the line in a 20-18 win for the Pretoria school.

Flyhalf Ruben Groenewald managed the game superbly for Affies in torrential conditions, kicking a crucial conversion and penalty goal.

Paul Roos replacement hooker Lehan Barnard scored a late try but Affies were able to hang on for a first win against their Stellenbosch counterparts in three years.

Earlier, replacement forward Hayden Pienaar scored a converted try with two minutes remaining as Nico Malan beat Glenwood 41-39.

Both sides crossed the line five times, with Nico Malan No 8 and captain Pietman Kleinhans grabbing a double.

Waterkloof bounced back from last week’s loss to Nelspruit with an eight-try, 52-26 win against hosts Diamantveld.

Winger Jaiden Badenhorst and hooker Ruan Jacobs both crossed the line twice for Klofies, who led 35-7 at the break.

In the opening match of the day, Marlow fought back from 17-3 down at half time to beat Welkom Gim 25-22.
