The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has confirmed that its deputy president, Robert Nwedo, has stepped down from his role, describing the move as “unexpected”. Nwedo resigned just two months after joining the leadership of the newly formed political organisation.

In his resignation letter, Nwedo said he intends to dedicate his time to his trade union, MAWUSA (Maanda Ashu Workers Union of South Africa). His departure comes only a month after the party dismissed Nolubabalo Mcinga as its second deputy president.

The back-to-back exits of two senior figures have intensified speculation about possible internal tensions within the emerging political movement.

Leadership Shake-Up Raises Questions Ahead of December Convention

Mayibuye spokesperson Sydney Baloyi said the party did not anticipate Nwedo’s decision but stressed that preparations for the organisation’s inaugural national convention in December remain their main priority.

Baloyi said the party will address leadership vacancies either during the convention or afterwards.

Meanwhile, the movement is proceeding with its fundraising gala dinner on Friday, where seats at the deputy president’s table were previously priced at R1.5 million.

“Robert Nwedo has informed the Mayibuye officials of his decision to resign from his position as the deputy president of Afrika Mayibuye Movement. He stated in the same letter that he has resolved to build something outside of Mayibuye.

“Whilst this came a little unexpectedly for us, it is important to share with you that Mayibuye is currently single-mindedly focused on our first national convention, happening from 5th until 7th December.

“A decision on the filling of vacant positions, including the one occasioned by this resignation, will either be made then or after,” said Baloyi.

Internal Dynamics Under Scrutiny as Party Moves Forward

Nwedo’s departure marks another leadership shift for the movement as it works to establish itself ahead of its first national conference.

Supporters and observers are now watching closely to see how the party stabilises its leadership structure in the weeks to come.
