The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Dada Morero will continue in his role as Mayor of Johannesburg, even after losing his bid for re-election as the party’s regional leader.
Morero was defeated at the ANC’s Johannesburg regional elective conference, where he attempted to retain his position as chairperson. The election saw Loyiso Masuku emerge victorious, becoming the first woman to hold the ANC regional chair in the city.

Although Morero no longer leads the region politically, the party’s new leadership says it sees no reason for him to vacate the mayoral office.
ANC Structures Clarify Mayoral Selection Process
Within ANC tradition, a regional chairperson often assumes the mayoral position in a municipality. However, newly elected chairperson Loyiso Masuku emphasised that mayoral decisions in metros are made at a national level.

“Discussions on mayoral candidates is the competency of national office bearers. It is not even on our purview to discuss such matters. We are here to serve residents of Johannesburg,” Masuku said.
