The African National Congress (ANC)’s national executive committee (NEC) has stressed that no individual implicated in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will be shielded from accountability.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said on Tuesday that if sufficient evidence emerges to justify legal action, it should be pursued even before the commission finalises its work.

Speaking at a briefing on the outcomes of a recent NEC meeting, Mbalula noted that the party wants revelations from the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s ad hoc committee on police corruption to reinforce the ANC’s renewal agenda.

The ANC has instructed its integrity commission to closely monitor testimony presented at both the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s ad hoc committee.

Mbalula said the party expects its ethics body to make recommendations on any necessary steps, guided by its mandate and terms of reference.

He added that this forms part of the party’s longstanding commitment to internal reform:
“So, there should be no holy cows when the recommendations come and they point in the direction that some of us have erred in the course of duty.”

Former and current police ministers, Bheki Cele and Senzo Mchunu, have faced scrutiny at Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.

Mbalula said the ANC fully supports both investigations, expressing confidence that their outcomes will strengthen key state institutions.
