The African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League has intensified its call for harsher measures against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), urging government to tighten parole regulations for convicted offenders.
The organisation addressed the media on Sunday afternoon during the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Germiston, expressing frustration over what it views as slow progress in tackling widespread violence against women and children.

ANCWL Secretary-General Nokuthula Nqaba said GBVF continues to be a persistent challenge for the state and requires urgent action.
Nqaba reiterated the league’s demands, saying, “We reiterate our call, as submitted in a comprehensive memorandum to both the Presidency and the National Assembly, which calls for the following: To speed up the process on the review of the Sexual Offences Act.”
Government Urged to Strengthen Legal Protections for GBVF Victims
She stressed that legislation must prioritise the safety and rights of survivors. “No bail may be considered in respect of offences of GBVF and femicide. We want enhanced training for law enforcement and a minimum life sentence to be imposed if an accused is convicted of GBVF.”
The league maintains that tougher sentencing, improved policing standards, and stricter parole frameworks are essential to curb the national GBVF crisis.
