The family attorney an 18-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who was killed in a car crash is facing charges for allegedly stealing evidence from the vehicle involved.
Indianapolis lawyer James David “JD” Masur II is charged with theft, criminal mischief and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. Hamilton County, Indiana, investigators said Masur had an employee of a tow yard remove items from the car two weeks after the March 2025 crash that killed Mason Alexander, according to coverage by the Indianapolis Star.
The crash happened while Alexander was on spring break and was the passenger inside a BMW 340i that Trey Williams was driving. Williams, who was 17 years old at the time of the crash, attempted to go around a car in a no-passing zone and swerved to avoid on-coming traffic, hitting a tree. Alexander died at the crash site.
The wrecked car was taken to a tow yard where Masur and Alexander’s uncle allegedly attempted to retrieve the car’s black box, which was destroyed after the car caught fire. Other items, however, were taken.
The Hamilton County sheriff’s office couldn’t confirm that Masur had made a request with the office to obtain items from the car.
