As we celebrate the life of cinema legend Robert Redford, Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Stephen Galloway, former Executive Editor of The Hollywood Reporter and current Dean at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Mr. Galloway brings a thoughtful, nuanced reflection on Redford’s legacy as actor, director, artist, and activist. Behind the enduring image of Hollywood’s “golden boy” was a man of great complexity. Redford maintained the mystique of movie star while reshaping culture through his directorial vision, his championing of independent cinema, and his deep commitment to environmentalism. “I was born with a dark eye,” he once…
At the immigrant centre, Perfidia encounters the sinister Captain Steven Lockjaw, a character as broadly drawn as his name. Sean Penn makes him thoroughly convincing as a sexual creep who later bullies and blackmails her, and who admits that he is drawn to her because she is black. Perfidia soon goes underground, abandoning Bob and their baby, and it’s enough to say here that her perfidious name suggests duplicity for a reason. The opening sequences are taut, but the film really takes off and the comedy comes in when the story jumps ahead 16 years and lands in Bob’s small house.…

Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera star in the true story of a heroic rescue which took place in California in 2018. The film is even more “visceral” than genuine news footage.News videos of California wildfires have shown jaw-dropping devastation in recent years. But horrifying though they are, those reports are not as visceral as the experience of watching The Lost Bus. Paul Greengrass’ enthralling film – with Matthew McConaughey as a school bus driver trying to get children to safety as a fire blazes around them, and America Ferrera as a teacher on board – is based on the true story…

In 1955, annexation of Rockall was about ensuring national security. But within a few decades, the government became more concerned with securing rights to Rockall’s fish-rich waters, and the potentially vast oil reserves on the seabed. Ireland, Iceland and Denmark (acting on behalf of the Danish Faroe Islands) had begun staking rival claims to these lucrative waters. Keen to cement British ownership, Parliament voted to formally incorporate Rockall into the UK in 1972, making it part of Scotland’s Western Isles. However, no other nation recognised the UK’s claim. A further blow came in 1982 when the UN Convention of the Seas…
