In 2017, as the dust settled from South Africa’s #FeesMustFall protests, a quiet revolution was taking shape. It wasn’t happening in the halls of parliament or the streets of Cape Town, but online—on a tech-enabled platform designed to rewrite the future for thousands of financially excluded students. That platform is Feenix, and today, it’s one of South Africa’s most innovative responses to the country’s enduring education funding gap. Rooted in the idea that access to education shouldn’t depend on wealth, Feenix launched as a Public Benefit Organisation to bridge the divide between aspiration and affordability. Through a unique crowdfunding model,…

Simplicity of designThe slogan has also been appropriated by protesters, “subverting the original propaganda message by adapting it to new situations and new social challenges (‘Keep calm and resist’)”, says Parry. “This shows how existing familiarity with a phrase can provide a shorthand tactic to attract attention, and hopefully get your message across in a memorable and often humorous way.”The poster’s plainness has also contributed to its resonance. “The simplicity of the design is crucial to its adaptability, with the crown at the top, and five large words, in white sans serif typeface, on a red background. Red is a…

“Pac-Man [the character] was designed to represent the core concept of the game, ‘to eat’, in the simplest way possible,” Michiko Kumagai, the licensing manager for the iconic character at the game’s publisher, Bandai Namco, tells the BBC. “Just like the McDonald’s arches, he’s become an internationally recognised symbol. At one glance everyone can understand what Pac-Man means instinctively, [which] is why Pac-Man has reached such a wide audience.”Reach a wide audience it certainly has. Originally called PuckMan in Japan, a reference to the Japanese phrase “paku paku taberu”, which means to gobble something up while producing a greedy, jaw-snapping sound,…

In the weird, wild, and wonderful era of the ’90s, my brothers and I had a ritual that defined our week: watching Monday night wrestling.I was the oldest, with Sean three years behind me and Andrew trailing another four. Our age gaps were big enough for bickering but close enough to create a kind of tag-team loyalty.Every Monday night, without fail, we’d inhale dinner like a pack of raccoons and then launch ourselves onto the living room floor for what mattered most: the Monday Night Wars on our console TV. This was before HD and 4K. We were grateful to…
Throughout July, as FBI agents continued to scour the Mississippi swampland looking for the three missing civil rights activists, they repeatedly came across the remains of other black murder victims. One of these was the body of 14-year-old Herbert Oarsby, who was discovered wearing a Core T-shirt. Charles Eddie Moore, who had been one of 600 students expelled from Alcorn State University in April 1964 for participating in civil rights protests, was found alongside the body of his childhood friend Henry Hezekiah Dee. The two 19-year-olds had been abducted in May 1964 by the KKK, who had brutally beaten them…
