Her intricately layered artwork uses metal, rubber, canvas and printmaking to create scenes of oppression, trauma and renewal. As she stages her first major exhibition in Paris, Kathia St Hilaire joins us to talk about weaving her Haitian ancestry into her pieces, how Vodun practices inspire her work and why the late Haitian poet Frankétienne is a kindred spirit when it comes to his cyclical vision of a chaotic world. 8. Tree Tent by Tree Tents International – Dalarna, Sweden (2016)The giant red bauble suspended from pines at Näsets Marcusgård, a former farm, is not a Christmas decoration but a “tree tent” made of an aluminium and plywood frame, wrapped up in a waterproof canvas. The customisable tree house, says Tree Tents International’s founder and design director Jason Thawley, aims “to connect people to the outdoors through design” and “works with nature rather than building against or around it”. Willem Terstegen, the co-owner of Näsets Marcusgård, tells the BBC: “Being among the trees offers a small shift that feels immense.…

Recently, I became interested in horror films, especially those concerning demons and paranormal activity. It started in 2023 when my mom had me watch Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist. While I enjoyed the movie, my initial thoughts were that this movie is just Hollywood’s understanding of exorcisms and the demonic. Surely there are no real cases of people climbing walls, and possessions matching the artistic representations Hollywood uses in the movies. However, as I thought about what the Bible says about possessions and exorcisms, I realized movie depictions of demonic possession are more accurate to Scripture than I first assumed.Thankfully,…
A Book That Refuses to Flatter Power: The Hypocrisy of the West Takes Aim at Global Double Standards
At a time when migration, democracy, and global power are dominating international debate, a new book is forcing an uncomfortable reckoning. The Hypocrisy of the West, the latest nonfiction work by veteran journalist Chris Anu, is rapidly gaining attention for its unflinching critique of Western foreign policy toward Africa—and the human consequences of its contradictions. Now available in paperback and on Amazon Kindle, the book is not a casual polemic. It is a carefully argued, deeply researched examination of how Western governments preach democracy and accountability while routinely legitimizing authoritarian regimes across Africa. In doing so, Anu argues, they help produce…

Winner of the best actor award at Cannes, he was widely considered a sure thing for an Oscar nomination until the Actor awards (previously the SAG awards) nominations were announced last week and Moura, along with every other performer in a film not in the English language, was left out. Since actors are the largest voting block among Academy Awards voters, that wasn’t a great sign. It’s true that Globes members (who are international journalists) are more likely to embrace a performance not in English, but still: that win puts Moura firmly back in the running. Country overview:IOA has developed a wide-ranged understanding of Zambia through research and consulting on the country. Our political analysts note the pervasive continuation of government corruption, and our economic researchers have pointed to a lack of worker productivity as hindrances to economic growth. The landlocked country is rich in mineral wealth and enjoys other natural resources that if properly exploited will propel economic improvement. The education and health systems are under-financed and thus underdeveloped, with the latter facing a persistent problem with malaria in all Zambian provinces. A lack of rural employment is leading Zambia to becoming the world’s most…
