Nestled in the southern Mediterranean, off the south-east coast of Tunisia, lies the island of Djerba. With a rich cultural and religious history, it has been a crossroad of many civilisations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs, and is home to many unique architectural sites. These include the Sedouikech underground mosque, St Joseph’s Church and the El Ghriba Synagogue. But, for many years, Djerba’s cultural heritage has been in danger. This is due to a combination of over-tourism, environmental change and human neglect. By the 1990s to early 2000s, when Djerba was at the height of its popularity, the…
Winter in Gauteng comes with its charms — crisp blue skies, jacaranda skeletons, and that first morning coffee warming your hands. But it also sparks the craving to escape. Not far-flung, plane-ticket kind of escape. Between June and November, the country’s southern and eastern shores host the magnificent southern right whales as they migrate from Antarctica to breed and calve in warmer waters. If you’ve ever wanted to watch a whale breach against a golden sunrise or spot a calf nuzzle alongside its mother in the shallows, this is your trail to follow. 1. A former Nigerian diplomat and security analyst have strongly criticised the latest travel advisory issued by the United States government, describing it as exaggerated, counterproductive, and based on outdated intelligence. The advisory, released on July 15, 2025, by the U.S. Department of State, urged American citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to widespread insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure. Eighteen states were listed under the “Do Not Travel” category, including Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa due to terrorism and kidnapping, and several southern states due to violent crime and armed gangs. Reacting to the advisory,…
In a tragic turn for Hwange National Park’s lion pride, a well‑known male explorer lion named Blondie was shot and killed by a trophy hunter.
