Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to walk an international tightrope over the next week as he departs Friday for a set of Indo-Pacific Summit meetings, one of which involves both the United States and China. The challenge will involve staying on the relative good side of U.S. President Donald Trump while carefully resetting relations with China’s Xi Jinping. The trip got off to a rocky start, even before the prime minister’s plane departed, when Trump terminated all trade talks with Canada. He’s angry over an ad, running in the United States, that selectively quotes former U.S. president Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.…
Civil Rights and Wrongs is a recurring series by Daniel Harawa covering criminal justice and civil rights cases before the court. Please note that the views of outside contributors do not reflect the official opinions of SCOTUSblog or its staff. The conventional wisdom goes that the Supreme Court decides questions, not cases. Put differently, the justices’ role is usually to answer the larger legal questions raised by a case, not to dwell on the factual issues which gave rise to the case itself. As a general rule, litigants present issues of fact to the trial court. The trial judge sifts…

Arizona law enforcement agencies are largely rejecting a fast-growing ICE program that lets local officers act as deportation agents — citing the experience of the state’s largest sheriff’s office, which was booted from the program in 2009 after a federal judge found deputies racially profiled and violated the constitutional rights of Latinos. Even in Republican-led communities known for backing immigration measures, law enforcement leaders are steering clear of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(g)…

The Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon turned down a request from an Alabama inmate to block his execution, which is scheduled for today. In an unsigned order, the justices denied Anthony Boyd’s plea to put his execution on hold and to decide whether executing him by nitrogen hypoxia would violate the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Boyd had asked to be executed by a firing squad instead. As is customary in cases involving requests for emergency relief, the court did not provide any explanation for its decision. Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented from the court’s decision to allow…
