He is away visiting a sick relative, and a Weather Channel forecast of Hurricane Helene’s imminent collision with the North Carolina mountains is leaving him uneasy. The storm, more than 400 miles wide, is expected to strike their small community the next morning, Sept. 27. Janicke encourages him to focus on his family up in Boston. That is more important. She is fine. It’s been raining a lot, but the house is fine. Everything is fine. He’ll fly home…

Nahil Sadaqa loves soccer — and one of his favourite teams helps him connect with his Palestinian identity. This club plays in Palestinian colours, its fans wave Palestinian flags, its sponsors include the Bank of Palestine and its jerseys have images of the keffiyeh and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. But the team isn’t based in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli-occupied West Bank or even the Middle East. No clear decision emerges from arguments on judges’ power to block Trump’s birthright citizenship order
The Supreme Court on Thursday was divided over whether a federal judge has the power to block President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship while the case moves through the lower courts. The Trump administration told the justices it should be able to at least partly implement the order. Although several justices in recent years have expressed skepticism about so-called nationwide injunctions, which bar the government from enforcing a law or policy anywhere in the country, during more than two hours of oral arguments, it was not clear whether a majority of the justices were ready to bar such…

Nick Alvis makes a case for returning to Dubai Marina dining…Thanks to Dubai’s ever-increasing traffic, there are a handful of areas I largely chose to avoid during peak hours – Dubai Marina being one of them. So, I’m surprised to find myself heading – albeit glacially – for a 7pm dinner reservation at Le Royal Meridien one mid-week evening. But this is no ordinary dinner reservation. At the helm of newly opened The Beam is Nick Alvis, one of a collective of independent chefs who paved the way for Dubai’s homegrown restaurant scene to flourish in the late twenty-teens. After departing…

Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, a statement from his office said on Sunday. Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after he saw a doctor last week for urinary symptoms. The cancer is a more aggressive form of the disease, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 out of 10. This means his illness is classified as “high-grade” and that the cancer cells could spread quickly, according to Cancer Research UK. Biden and his family are said to be reviewing treatment options. The former president’s office added that the…
The pro-European Union candidate in Romania’s critical presidential run-off has won the closely watched race against a hard-right nationalist, nearly complete electoral data shows, in a tense election rerun that many viewed as a geopolitical choice between East and West. The race pitted front-runner George Simion, the 38-year-old leader of the hard-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, against Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest. It was held months after the cancellation of the previous election plunged Romania into its worst political crisis in decades. After 10.5 million of 11.6 million votes had been counted, Dan was ahead with 54.32 per…
This article is part of a series on the legacy and jurisprudence of the late Justice David Souter. Michael Mongan currently serves as the California Solicitor General. He clerked for Justice David Souter from 2007 to 2008. In the days since Justice Souter passed away, I’ve struggled to assemble words that convey the depth of my feelings about him. Some portion of that difficulty might be attributed to the private and humble manner in which he lived his life. He generally avoided making public remarks outside the courtroom (with a few notable exceptions, like his outstanding speech at Harvard in 2010). He spent much…
