When the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights notified George Mason University on July 1 that it was opening an antisemitism investigation based on a recent complaint, the university’s president, Gregory Washington, said he was “perplexed.” Compared with other campuses, where protesters had ransacked buildings and hunkered down in encampments, George Mason had been relatively quiet over the past year, he said. His administration had taken extensive steps to improve relations with the Jewish community, had enacted strict…

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to allow Florida to enforce a state law that makes it a crime for anyone who entered the United States illegally to enter or remain in the state. In a brief unsigned order, the justices left in place an order by a federal district judge in Miami that bars the state from implementing the law. The groups challenging the law had argued that the state had failed to “adequately explain why, especially given Florida’s extensive and ongoing collaboration with federal enforcement efforts, the State must also be allowed to enforce its own state immigration…

Liberians reacted with a mix of anger and weary resignation Thursday after discovering that the leader of their country’s closest bilateral partner does not appear to know what language they speak. At a meeting at the White House on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump responded to brief remarks from his Liberian counterpart, Joseph Boakai, by marvelling at his “beautiful” English and asking where he learned it.This has resulted in much eye-rolling and plenty of frustration, as English is the official language of Liberia, a country founded in 1822 as a colony for free Black Americans.Government statements are published in standard English…
