We rarely talk about it, but we should — the virus behind one of the most preventable cancers in the world. This October, BellaNaija began the #StopHPVForHer campaign to break the silence around HPV and cervical cancer. It’s a call to action for women to learn, ask, and protect themselves through screening and vaccination before the disease ever takes hold. Still, many women are unsure where to begin and they have questions. What exactly is HPV? How does it lead to cervical cancer? And what can women do, today, to protect themselves, their daughters and the people they love? To…

What if one conversation could change how we think about cervical cancer in Nigeria? Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable forms of cancer, yet it continues to claim thousands of lives each year, largely due to misinformation and limited access to screening. At the centre of the crisis is the human papillomavirus, or HPV, a virus that can be stopped long before it becomes fatal. Vaccines and regular screenings offer real protection, but misinformation and limited access often keep many women unprotected. Trailblazing South African rugby referee Aimee Barrett-Theron, who is on the cusp of overseeing her 50th Test match, lauds the 2025 Women’s World Cup – a tournament that drew record crowd attendance and viewership numbers – as the best thing to happen to rugby. “The World Cup just gets better and better on the world stage, being able to ref the best women’s rugby players in the world, it’s incredibly special. Jan-Hendrik Wessels has reportedly been handed a nine-week suspension for an act of foul play despite a lack of video evidence. The incident occurred in the 18th minute of Friday night’s URC match between Connacht and the Bulls when Connacht flank Josh Murphy complained to referee Mike Adamson that Wessels had grabbed his genitals at a breakdown. There was no conclusive video evidence for the match officials, though, and Wessels remained on the field with Murphy red-carded for retaliation. With the warmth and ambient light of the atmosphere, the guests were served a multi-course meal created to…
While scrolling through Instagram recently, I came across a photo of myself from October 17, 2020. In the image, I am holding a placard in support of the #EndSARS protest, wearing a cap and a green face mask, colored in the Nigerian flag. I let out a deep sigh, not just because I remembered the stress of trekking under the blazing sun to show my solidarity with the movement, but also because I was mourning the version of myself that didn’t have to hold on to hope each morning to convince myself that Nigeria is still home. I was grieving…
