The Sharks got their first points of the Vodacom URC season after salvaging a draw against the Dragons in biblical conditions in Newport on Friday. The Durban side failed to convert their 17-14 half time lead and had to be satisfied with a 17-17 draw against last year’s wooden spoonists. The Dragons were on a 18-match losing streak dating back to September last year going into this weekend. REPORT: Stormers’ second-half surge sinks Ospreys John Plumtree’s charges were first to score, thanks to lock Marvin Orie who propelled himself over the tryline – just reward for a strong start to…

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has tipped Orlando Pirates Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s youngster to leave for Europe next season. The 20-year-old defender has been one of the club’s best players this season, having featured in all seven league matches so far. The former SA U/20 centre-back made his professional debut earlier this year but has quickly established himself not only at Pirates but also at Bafana Bafana. Broos feels the Pirates superstar has nothing to prove anymore in the PSL and should move to bigger leagues in Europe. “If you see the quality and the talent of Mbokazi, I’m very…

They later switched things up with vibrant kente, proudly representing the bride’s Ghanaian heritage. Their big…
Top seed Jessica Schilz lived up to her billing, winning the U18 girls finals at the Trio Tennis South Africa Junior Masters on Sunday, 28 September in Cape Town. In the U18 girls division, number seven seed Meri Sandenbergh punched above her weight, beating fellow Western Province player Schilz in the round-robin stage of the tournament before defeating number two seed Milla Kotze in the penultimate round. In the final, however, tournament favourite Schilz hit back to secure a 6-2; 6-0 victory to claim the title. Lisa-Marie du Toit beat Kotze 6-3; 6-2 to win the third-place playoff, while Alicia…
October is that month in the year that carries a lot of weight on a personal note and, obviously, on a national note. I enter the month with a lot of introspection because my mind always runs on diagnostics and consequently developing paradigms, solutions and blueprints that can move the proverbial needle. On the cusp of Independence Day last year, I was just interrogating a biblical text for other purposes, but the more I looked at the story, the man at the Beautiful Gate appeared more and more to me as a metaphor of the dysfunction that Nigeria had become.…
Francke Horn will captain the Lions against Zebre in Parma on Sunday having recovered from a calf injury. Coach Cash van Rooyen has made five changes from the side beaten by Cardiff in the opening round of the Vodacom URC, with Horn’s comeback a major boost for the Joburg-based outfit. The No 8 replaces WJ Steenkamp and takes over the captaincy from fullback Quan Horn, who continues in the back three alongside Angelo Davids and Eduan Keyter, the former Sharks winger set for his Lions URC debut. Chris Smith has completed his return-to-play protocols after a concussion and starts at…
Women are a crucial part of Nigeria’s economy. They represent nearly half of the population and own over 40 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses. However, they are mostly excluded from the formal credit system. This exclusion comes at a significant cost, affecting not only women but also the economy as a whole. A Gates Foundation survey of over 100,000 Nigerian women found that 62 per cent identified lack of start-up capital or equipment as their greatest barrier to economic participation. This core financial constraint is compounded by structural inequities, including insufficient training and weak family support. Despite these…
