SA Rugby has revamped its professional junior rugby pathways to ensure emerging players are optimally prepared for senior rugby. The change was approved at a Special General Council meeting of SA Rugby on Wednesday, following a thorough review of the playing calendar, to provide additional opportunities for game time at an important developmental stage of playing careers. Matt Smith was the first of two Team SA athletes in action on Friday at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics when he took to the snow in the men’s Cross-Country Skiing 10km one-off final.  The 35-year-old, one of five Team SA athletes at these Games, which is the largest-ever representation at a Winter Olympics, placed 108th overall, with a time of 30min 4.4sec, which was 9min 28.2sec off the gold medallist, Johannes Klaebo, of Norway.
