Nigeria’s women’s tennis team has achieved a historic milestone by securing promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group II for the first time. This feat was accomplished after the team defeated hosts Botswana 2-1 in the promotion playoff at the 2026 Europe/Africa Group III qualifiers in Gaborone.
The team, comprising Etoro Bassey, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed, and Oyinlomo Quadre, under the guidance of coach Rotimi Akinloye, initially topped Group C at the qualifiers with victories over Burundi, Namibia, and Madagascar. However, their promotion bid suffered a setback when they lost 2-1 to Tunisia.
Nigeria bounced back by defeating Botswana in the decisive final match, which ultimately led to their promotion. This win was a significant turnaround, as it enabled the team to seal their place in the promotion playoff, which they went on to win against the same opponents, thus completing their historic breakthrough.
The achievement marks Nigeria’s first promotion to the Europe/Africa Group II since the country’s debut in the competition in 2021. It comes after the team narrowly missed out on a similar breakthrough in 2024, when they topped their group and defeated hosts Kenya before losing to South Africa in the decisive promotion round.
The landmark victory follows Nigeria’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II earlier this year, highlighting the progress of the country’s tennis program on both the men’s and women’s fronts. The Billie Jean King Cup is the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s tennis, making Nigeria’s promotion a significant milestone as the country’s tennis program continues to build momentum on the international stage.
