Build One South Africa (BOSA) has made it clear that it will not join the Government of National Unity (GNU) if the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the MK Party form part of the coalition.
This comes after the African National Congress (ANC) announced that it was considering broadening the GNU to include additional opposition parties. The ruling party’s move follows interest from several parties that had previously supported the passing of the national budget.

Speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday, BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane confirmed his party had not yet received a formal invitation to join the GNU.
Maimane: “We Can’t Govern Without Agreement”
Maimane questioned the viability of a coalition that brings together parties with fundamentally different ideologies.
“We can’t govern simply with people just for ministers. It requires a plan that is deliberate and that explains how we will deliver for the people of this country. If we don’t have a basis of agreement, what then is the purpose of governing?” he said.
He further stressed that if the EFF and MK Party were to join the GNU, BOSA would prefer to stay in the opposition.
“Adding political parties like MK and many others will complicate the issue and make it impossible for us to be part of what will become of parties that are not ideologically or governmentally coherent,” Maimane added.

While the ANC has proposed expanding the GNU, it remains unclear whether the plan will materialize. Analysts note that adding more parties could further strain the already fragile coalition dynamics.

Some coalition partners argue that expansion would not resolve the ongoing tensions with the Democratic Alliance (DA), which continue to undermine the GNU’s stability.
