Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos could leave his job if he loses to Cameroon.

Bafana play Cameroon in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening. Broos’ men finished second in Group B with six points. In all three matches, the South Africans failed to impress and needed late goals to overcome both Zimbabwe and Angola.

Against Egypt, Bafana failed to score a single goal despite playing with a man advantage for the entire second half.

Speaking on Smash Sports podcast, the retired winger questioned Broos’ decision to leave out the likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, Iqraam Rayners and Grant Kekana

“If that guy loses, he won’t be able to explain,” Khanye said.

“Kekana is playing in the Champions League; you left him out for Ngezana. I don’t care if he plays in Europe. You saw that he’s having a terrible tournament, yet you still keep him. You leave out Rayners, the guys who troubled the likes of Dortmund,” he said.

Broos reached third place with Bafana in 2024

Having reached the semi-finals of the previous AFCON, Bafana went to qualify for the 2025 edition and also secured 2026 World Cup spot under Broos.

Expectations were high coming into the tournament; however poor showing has had many fans talking about the team’s lack of execution, poor defending and inability to break teams down.

It’s unlikely that the South African Football Association (SAFA) will terminate the coach’s contract with just six months left. Broos could face backlash if Bafana lose to Cameroon, which might prompt him to quit before his last tournament in charge.

Bafana play Cameroon in the round of 16 in Rabat on Sunday evening.

Do you think Hugo Broos will end his tenure or will be forced to resign?
