Renowned senior advocate Dali Mpofu is under scrutiny as the Legal Practice Council (LPC) proceeds with a formal disciplinary inquiry into seven charges of professional misconduct, a move that could have lasting consequences on his legal career.

Accusations Include Defamation, Unprofessional Conduct, and Courtroom Misconduct
According to the Sunday Times, Mpofu stands accused of damaging the reputation of the legal profession, defaming individuals, breaching the legal code of conduct, and failing to uphold his responsibilities to the court. These charges stem from multiple high-profile incidents over the past few years.

One of the most widely criticised moments occurred in March 2021 during the State Capture Commission, when Mpofu infamously told advocate Michelle le Roux, representing Minister Pravin Gordhan, to “shut up” during a heated exchange.

The commission’s chairperson, Justice Raymond Zondo, called the behaviour “unacceptable.”

In another case from March 2022, the Johannesburg Society of Advocates found Mpofu in violation of its ethical code. The society gave him five days to provide input on suitable disciplinary measures. Mpofu responded by calling the ruling “ridiculous” and announced his intent to appeal the decision.

    Legal Practice Council Inquiry Underway

The Legal Practice Council, tasked with regulating and disciplining legal professionals in South Africa, has opened a formal inquiry into Mpofu’s conduct. As of April 9, 2025, the matter remains under review, and no final verdict has been announced.

The LPC’s disciplinary process will focus on whether Mpofu’s alleged actions undermine the integrity and decorum expected of legal practitioners, particularly those holding senior positions in the profession.

Potential Fallout for Dali Mpofu and the Legal Sector

The inquiry’s outcome is expected to serve as a defining moment for the Legal Practice Council, reinforcing its mandate to uphold ethical standards and accountability in South Africa’s legal field.

Mpofu, a prominent figure both in and outside the courtroom, has long been known for his bold courtroom style and controversial political commentary. The case could have broader implications for how professional boundaries are policed within high-stakes legal proceedings.
