John Dobson’s long-term vision for Stormers Rugby has been locked in.

The Stormers’ director of rugby has signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him in charge through to the end of Project 2029, ensuring continuity at the top of the organisation as the Cape club pushes towards its most ambitious targets yet.

Dobson has been central to the Stormers’ modern rise, having been part of the system since 2010. He led Western Province to Currie Cup glory in 2017 and guided the Stormers to the inaugural Vodacom URC title in 2021-22, before stepping into the director of rugby role in 2024.

His extended deal comes at a time of growing momentum for the union. Significant progress has already been made towards Project 2029, where the club aims to win both the URC and Investec Champions Cup. Stormers Rugby has already successfully started attracting elite junior talent from across the country while strengthening senior depth through selective external signings.

On the field, the Stormers have made a perfect start to the season, winning all nine of their matches to date.

Stormers Rugby CEO Johan le Roux said Dobson’s retention was critical to the club’s long-term ambitions.

“John Dobson is the embodiment of what we stand for as a club. He is a homegrown coach who is incredibly passionate about this team, the region and the people who support us.

“We have set ourselves some lofty goals in Project 2029, but we have absolute confidence that if we are to reach them, then Dobbo is the man for the job.”

Dobson said he is energised by the challenge ahead and believes the foundations are firmly in place.

“With the support of our owners, we have managed to build some meaningful depth, which has translated into some positive results so far this season.

“At the same time, we are investing in our future by recruiting the top junior talent in the country.”

He also paid tribute to the environment around him at Stormers Rugby.

“We have some incredible people at this club, all in it together. The coaches and support staff I work with are world-class professionals, but also incredible people who put the club first in everything they do.

“The new ownership has made a huge impact, and we have never felt more aligned with everyone in the organisation than we do now. I’m really excited for what the future holds for all of us.”
