Donavan Don scored two tries as Boland ambushed the Lions in the round 3 Currie Cup clash in Wellington on Sunday afternoon.

The Blitzboks flyer’s double was matched by tries from fellow winger Xavier Mitchell and replacement flyhalf Juan Mostert as Boland raced to a 29-10 victory to hand the Lions their first loss of the season.

The Lions dominated territory early on, with repeated Boland infringements resulting in centre Lunathi Nxele being sent to the sin bin. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Boland struck first through Don, finishing in the corner after sustained pressure from the forwards.

The visitors responded when flyhalf Kade Wolhuter sliced through the defence to level the scores. A penalty in front of the posts allowed fullback James Tedder to edge Boland ahead 8-5.

The home pack then took control at the scrum, forcing repeated penalties. Their dominance paid off when Ashlon Davids broke the line and sent Don over for his second, giving Boland a 15-5 halftime lead.

The Lions closed the gap in the third quarter through fullback Gianni Lombard, capitalising while Tedder was in the sin bin. Mitchell’s try, converted by Tedder, restored the hosts’ 10-point advantage before Mostert crossed after the hooter to seal a 29-10 win in Wellington.

In the next round, the Lions travel to Nelspruit to take on the Pumas, while Boland will look to claim another big scalp when they host the Bulls.
