After enduring a historic and persistent stretch of excessive heat across the European continent, a welcome atmospheric shift is bringing much-needed cold refreshment to the eastern half of Europe. Central Europe and the Balkans, which recently faced intense heat stress, urban heat islands, and multiple tropical nights, are finally experiencing a significant temperature downturn this week.
This weather pattern shift is driven by a dynamic upper-level flow that is allowing cooler, more unstable air masses to push southward. With a deep low-pressure system influencing the region, daytime highs are dropping down to comfortable, seasonable averages, staying below 30.
For urban residents in countries such as Hungary, Poland, Romania, and across the Balkan Peninsula, this means a dramatic reduction in heat-related strain and an opportunity to finally cool overheated buildings and infrastructure.
Along with the cooling temperatures, the transition will also trigger scattered thunderstorms where the cooler air mass collides with lingering heat from the central Mediterranean to the southern Balkans late this week. While these storms with downpours will bring some drought relief, they likely won’t be enough to lower high wildfire risks that accumulated during the peak of the recent heatwaves.
For millions across eastern and central regions, this refreshing break offers a vital pause before summer weather patterns evolve further.
Let’s dig into the details of how this week’s weather pattern evolves over the continent.
Weather pattern flips from Extreme Heat into a much-needed cold refreshment over Europe
The driving mechanism behind the pattern shift is the strengthening of the upper-level ridge over the Atlantic, allowing a large cold wave to develop over northern Europe and progress southward in the coming days.
The colder air mass will spread behind the leading cold front through mid-week, engulfing Central and Eastern Europe in temperatures 4- 8 °C below average by Thursday. The refreshing air mass will spread across the whole Eastern half of Europe this week.
It will remain extremely hot across southwestern Europe; we will have those details in a separate article later.
The surface pressure will also respond to the geopotential falls to the east and higher pressure under the ridge to the west. This means flow will be more meridional for a while.
The air masses will be transported from the far north, rounding the western Block and dragging the cold air far south towards the Balkans, including the Eastern Mediterranean late this week.
The strongest effect of the eastern trough will arrive by Friday and Saturday, when its core will be dragged into the far southern Balkans as a deep cold wave.
Thanks to persistent upper-level blocking over the Atlantic, this eastern cold wave will persist into the following weekend as well.
The 2m temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will be quite low across Central and Eastern Europe, with the strongest anomalies on Thursday across northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Poland.
Those will be significantly colder than what we have experienced lately and will also be accompanied by windy days.
The temperature anomaly on Friday and Saturday will be quite impressive for the end of July, with 10-12 °C below normal in the lowest layers of the atmosphere for the southern Balkans, southern Italy, and Greece.
With the ongoing peak tourist season in the region, this will be quite a relief after the recent extreme heat.
Unseasonably cold wave brings much lower night and daytime temperatures this week
Winds will also increase from Wednesday through Saturday, thanks to the stronger pressure difference between Western and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Thus, windy days will maintain refreshing temperatures for the broad regions.
However, it should be noted that it will be dry, windy days, so wildfire threats will remain extremely high.
Morning and nighttime temperatures from mid-week through the following weekend will be into the low to mid-10s in many countries across central and eastern Europe, a great deal to cool down the houses that were struggling to do so in the recent weeks.
Some regions could see morning temperatures in the 10s, especially where no winds will be present on clear nights.
Daytime highs will also be much lower than we have been used to lately, with low to mid-20s from the Benelux, Germany, and Poland to the northern Balkans through mid-week and a tad higher only until the weekend. Nevertheless, a much-welcomed refreshment for many.
Even in the far south of Italy, Greece, and Turkey, extreme temperatures will be limited late this week, with peaks on Friday only in the upper 30s to low 30s.
It will also remain excessively hot in the Iberian Peninsula, with Spain and Portugal keeping temperatures in the 40s.
The progress of the cold wave will also help to further destabilize the air mass along its edge, so the cold air mass clashing with the hot air mass ahead of the wave will result in high instability from Italy towards the southern Balkans.
This will trigger potential for severe thunderstorms from Wednesday through Friday as the core of the wave reaches the Ionian Sea and Greece.
The precipitation chart hints where the effects of the clashing air masses will be the most pronounced. Good amounts of rain are likely across the southern Balkans from Greece to Romania, the Black Sea and Ukraine.
Another area of active rainfall days will be over northeast Europe through mid-week, where the cold-wave cores remain, with stormy weather driven by cold northerlies over the warmer Baltic region.
