The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed the return of Ebrahim Rasool to its top Western Cape leadership ranks. The former ambassador to the United States has been named the convenor of the newly established Provincial Task Team (PTT).
The announcement marks a key step in the ruling party’s efforts to rebuild and reposition its provincial structures after a disappointing performance in last year’s general elections, where the party garnered only 19.5% of the vote in the province.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula met with the Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) on Wednesday amid growing speculation that the structure might be dissolved. Instead, Mbalula revealed a “reconfiguration” aimed at renewal rather than removal.

“The end goal is to strengthen the ANC in the Western Cape and that’s what we are doing. So we have not taken a drastic decision to dissolve anyone, we’ve reconfigured the leadership,” said Mbalula during a media briefing in Cape Town.

Mbalula emphasised that the reshuffle was designed to inject fresh energy into the organisation’s provincial operations. He added that the decision forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the party’s effectiveness and reconnect with communities in the Western Cape.

The Secretary-General also clarified that Rasool’s role as convenor is not a full-time position. Discussions are ongoing to finalise his terms of engagement.

“This task is not a full-time position. He has requested us, among others, to look at his situation and he will revert back to us on his decision. But the decision of the ANC is that he will convene this particular team,” Mbalula said.
Rasool, who previously served as the party’s Western Cape chairperson in 1998, brings extensive political and diplomatic experience to the role as the party seeks to restore its standing in the province.
