The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have opened a police case against Cedric Nkabinde, chief of staff to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, accusing him of misleading Parliament’s police corruption inquiry.

According to the party, Nkabinde submitted a sworn statement containing incorrect dates related to Mchunu’s engagements with North West businessman Brown Mogotsi.

The Ad Hoc Committee probing police corruption postponed Nkabinde’s scheduled testimony on Thursday after uncovering discrepancies in his version of events.

Committee members sharply criticised Nkabinde, alleging that he had intentionally misled them by providing inaccurate information about key incidents under investigation.

MPs from across the political spectrum agreed that Nkabinde should be excused and asked to return with corrected information, particularly after he conceded that he had “thumb sucked” certain details in his statement.

The EFF escalated the matter by laying a perjury charge at the Cape Town Central police station, arguing that Nkabinde’s conduct undermined the integrity of the inquiry.

“We had to adjourn because it came to light that his statement, and in his own words he said he was thumb sucking and it looked like it was extremely intentional.

“You can’t have someone who’s been in the police since 2004 and he does not understand the seriousness of giving us inaccurate statements,” said EFF ad hoc committee member Leigh Ann Mathys.
