Extra trains rolled out for Cape Town Cycle Tour to beat traffic chaos

If you’ve lived in Cape Town long enough, you know one thing about Cycle Tour Sunday, the roads belong to the cyclists.

According to IOL , this weekend, as thousands of riders gear up for the iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday, 8 March, traffic congestion and road closures are once again expected to test the patience of motorists. But this year, there’s a clear alternative: leave the car at home and catch the train.

PRASA Western Cape has announced additional train services to help cyclists and spectators move smoothly across the city without getting stuck in gridlock.

A greener, easier way to race day

For just R50 return for cyclists and R20 return for spectators, commuters can hop on what PRASA calls the “People’s Train” and travel hassle-free to the start line or prime viewing spots along the route.

The idea is simple: drive to your nearest station, park safely, and let the train do the heavy lifting.

Anyone who’s tried navigating the Southern Suburbs on Cycle Tour morning knows how quickly things can spiral. Streets close before sunrise. Traffic backs up in unexpected places. Even seasoned locals sometimes miscalculate.

This move isn’t just about convenience — it’s about making race day greener and reducing unnecessary congestion in residential areas already buzzing with excitement.

Where you can park and ride

Parking will be available at several stations along key routes.

Southern Line (Cape Town to Fish Hoek)

    Parking options include:

    • Observatory (public parking opposite station)

    • Rosebank (public parking opposite station)

    • Rondebosch (public parking opposite station)

    • Kenilworth (public parking opposite station)

    • Lakeside (secure PRASA parking)

    • Fish Hoek (public parking opposite station and at the beach)

    • Glencairn (PRASA parking)

Northern Line (Strand to Kraaifontein to Cape Town)

For many families, this could turn race day into a mini outing — train ride included.

    Security and early arrival encouraged

Regional Manager Raymond Maseko has urged commuters to arrive early to secure parking and allow enough travel time.

PRASA Protection Services, working alongside law enforcement, will maintain a visible security presence at stations and parking areas throughout the day — particularly along the Southern Line, where spectator activity is usually highest.

For cyclists juggling nerves, helmets, and pre-race rituals, the last thing anyone wants is transport stress. The train option offers predictability, something rare on Cycle Tour Sunday.

A Cape Town tradition in motion

The Cape Town Cycle Tour isn’t just a sporting event. It’s a cultural moment. From Muizenberg to Camps Bay, the city turns into one long cheering section. Residents set up early-morning coffee tables on pavements. Children ring cowbells. Social media fills with sunrise selfies at the start line.

And with thousands of participants and supporters flooding the city, smart transport planning makes all the difference.

Full train schedules and service updates will be shared on PRASA Western Cape’s official social media channels ahead of race day.

If there’s one Sunday in Cape Town when ditching your car feels like the smartest move — this is it.
