Couple misses anniversary trip to Sri Lanka, plans to help with relief efforts
Hi I’m Yasmine Ghania, a senior reporter in Vancouver who’s been speaking to Canadians with connections to southeast Asia.
One of them is Tharuka Kannangara, who lives in Bell Island, N.L. She’s originally from Sri Lanka, and her parents are still there, being told they may have to evacuate their home because of dangerously high water levels.
Kannangara was supposed to be in Sri Lanka this week with her husband to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. In light of the catastrophic storms, she still plans to be in her home country next week to help with relief efforts.
“It is such an important part of our life that when a disaster like this happens, we give 200 per cent,” she said.
