Three foreign hikers were safely assisted from Table Mountain on Tuesday evening after darkness left them stranded during their adventurous outing, reports Cape {town} Etc.

The group, consisting of two women from Norway and one from Denmark, embarked on their journey from Kloof Corner at around 5:30pm, navigating the popular but challenging India Venster route.

Although they reached the breathtaking Fountain Ledge, they displayed good judgement by deciding to turn back at the scramble section—an increasingly steep and technical area of the hike.

As they retraced their steps, the falling darkness began to encroach, transforming their optimistic adventure into a struggle for visibility.

Realising they were navigating more by hope than by sight, the hikers made the prudent decision to call for help, contacting the emergency number 021 937 0300.

This timely action led to a prompt response from a small rescue team, which was swiftly dispatched to their location.

Rescue teams are no strangers to the challenges posed by Table Mountain’s breathtaking terrain, and the responders quickly located the stranded hikers.

They guided the group safely back to the lower cable station of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, ensuring that the three women were unharmed by their unexpected ordeal. The successful operation concluded at 11:35pm, with the hikers now armed with stories far more thrilling than they had anticipated on their day out.

As South Africa transitions into shorter daylight hours with the change of seasons, outdoor enthusiasts are reminded of the importance of prepping accordingly. ‘While the views atop Table Mountain are undeniably world-class, the sunset is a clock that waits for no one,’ WSAR noted.

They urged hikers to always start early, plan ahead, and, most importantly, pack a torch or headlamp to prepare for any unforeseen delays.

The swift and effective response from the rescue teams emphasises their readiness to handle such emergencies and serves as a testament to their dedication.

‘A huge thank you to our teams for their calm and quick response, proving once again that even when darkness thinks it’s winning, our rescuers are always one step ahead,’ WSAR said.
