With less than three weeks to go before the world’s most powerful leaders gather in Johannesburg, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has confirmed that the province is officially ready to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
South Africa, which took over the G20 presidency at the end of 2024, will make history as the first African nation to chair the group of major developed and developing economies.

The landmark event will take place at the Nasrec Expo Centre, south of Johannesburg, where global heads of state will meet for two days of high-level discussions.
During the summit, leaders are expected to finalise a declaration outlining joint policy commitments on issues such as economic growth, debt management in emerging markets, geopolitical stability and climate action.
Panyaza Lesufi Declares Full Readiness for G20 Summit
Lesufi expressed confidence that the months of detailed planning and coordination have positioned Gauteng to deliver a world-class event.
“The Gauteng government can now formally [announce] its readiness to host the prestigious G20 Leaders’ summit,” Lesufi stated.
He credited the provincial government and local authorities for their extensive efforts in ensuring infrastructure, logistics and security readiness ahead of the major global gathering.
G20 Preparations to Shape Future Service Delivery
Addressing criticism that the province’s preparations were merely for appearances, Lesufi said the improvements made for the G20 would form the basis for ongoing development in Gauteng.

“We’ve resolved that even beyond the summit, the Tuesday meetings that we hold every week to prepare will continue even beyond the G20 so that we can convert them to service delivery meetings – not only so we can beautify our province, but also so municipalities can expedite service delivery.”
The Premier emphasised that the G20 preparations will leave a lasting legacy, driving accelerated service delivery and improved coordination across municipalities long after the summit concludes.
